Swimming with DISC
Right from the start of the club, swimming has been a very popular activity with members mainly because of the benefits of swimming.
Swimming is a low-impact activity which means there is less stress on the joints. Also movement of the body gives a sense of freedom for those who can't move properly. Benefits include:
- Improved aerobic fitness
- Improved muscle strength
- Improved balance and agility
- Improved confidence and comfort in and around water
Many of our members expressed an interest in having swimming lessons, so the committee undertook a survey of members to see how we could best achieve this. The results showed the need for a more structured swimming programme.
Swimathon Foundation
In May 2011, The DISC swimming program was given a significant boost through a swimming grant from the Swimathon Foundation.
The club applied for, and were successful in obtaining additional funding, to allow us to run a year long swimming programme for all our members.
The programme is delivered by an experienced level 2 swimming coach and she provides instruction to club members to enable them to learn to swim and/ or to improve their swimming ability. This also includes the opportunity to learn a new aquatic discipline (mini water polo) and to participate in a club swimming gala, which took place on the 6th of March 2011.
