Disability Inclusive Sports Club achieves Clubmark accreditation
Disability Inclusive Sports Club (DISC), has achieved Clubmark and become the first disability specific sports club in Northamptonshire and the second in the East Midlands to gain the accreditation.
Clubmark is the only national cross sports quality accreditation scheme for clubs with junior sections. It is built around a set of core criteria which ensure that accredited clubs operate to a set of consistent, accepted and adopted minimum operating standards.
DISC were presented with their Clubmark certificate at a special awards ceremony on Sunday 17 July 2011 at 3:45pm in the sports hall at Towcester Centre for Leisure.
In attendance were The Mayor of Towcester Martin Johns, Lynette Emary, Chair of DISC, Councillor Diana Dallyn vice-chairman of South Northants Council and Graeme Wilson, Sport &Disability Development Officer for Northamptonshire Sport.
Lynette Emary, chair of DISC, said: “We are very proud to have been awarded Clubmark. This is recognition of the high quality standards that we put in place for our members. I would like to thank everyone at DISC for making this possible but my biggest thanks and praise goes to Vice-Chairman of Disc, Chris Broderick and South Northamptonshire´s Sports Development Officer, Colin Hull. They have put an incredible amount of time and effort into obtaining this accreditation and for that our club is truly grateful!”

DISABILITY INCLUSIVE SPORTS CLUB WINS BARCLAYS COMMUNITY SPORTS AWARD
The Disability Inclusive Sports Club (DISC) based in Towcester has been named as the Barclays Community Sports Award winner for February by Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League’s Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation.
The club started in 2008 after South Northamptonshire Council funded a monthly taster session of sports, specifically aimed at young people with disabilities and their families. Due to the success of this event a permanent club was founded after the council reached out for willing volunteers in the community to run and staff it. In recent years, the club has managed to reach 65 registered members.
Due to members being unable to participate in mainstream sporting activities, DISC offers inclusive sporting opportunities to all. The club provides regular sessions that aim to promote self-confidence through social inclusion and an appreciation of sport as an enjoyable way for those with disabilities to spend their time. A number of qualified coaches provide expert coaching sessions in swimming, badminton, yoga and martial arts amongst other sports.
The award is judged by a panel which includes former England footballer and Gareth Southgate, who commented: ”The Disability Inclusive Sports Club have been doing a fantastic job at promoting a healthy lifestyle to young people that often don’t have the chance to partake in sporting activities. The fact that they now have over 60 members is a sign of the superb work that DISC is doing for the community.”
Lynette Emary, the Club Chair commented: ”We’re absolutely over the moon to receive this award from Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League’s Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation. The work that DISC does is invaluable to the local disabled community and the money will allow us to to increase the range of activities we offer to our members, increase our membership and hopefully branch into specific sport training groups”.
Each monthly winner receives £1,000 for their group or organisation, a limited edition trophy and will be entered into the end of season award to win a further £5,000, all donated by Barclays Spaces for Sports. The end of season award winner will also receive a VIP trip to London to receive their award from Gareth Southgate.

DISC HOLDS FIRST SWIMMING GALA
The first DISC Swimming Gala was held on Sunday 6th March 2011. We had a fun filled time cheering everyone on in some closely fought races, none more so than the Parents event!
Our swimming coaches Bridget and Laura are delighted with the progress that members have made over the past 12 months and the Gala was a great reflection of this.
DISC medals were awarded in each event by our guest Graeme Wilson, Disability Development Officer, Northamptonshire Sport. Winners are listed on the Swimming Gala page and we also have a great range of photographs available to view at club sessions
A huge thank you to all who took part and supported the event to make it so successful and enjoyable.
DISC Celebrates Mothers Day
We had great fun on Mothers day holding a party postponed by the bad weather at Christmas. Lots of fun games in the sports hall with Deidre including flying chocolate bunnies on the parachute! Members then had an awesome time in the pools playing on the inflatable adventure trail and surfing the waves!
Thanks to all who supported the day and our lovely Mums and carers went home with a beautiful floral tribute on their special day.
Changing Places facility opened in Towcester, providing changing facilities for physically disabled people.
The Vice-Chairman of South Northamptonshire Council, Councillor Sally Townsend, Councillor Robin Brown of Northamptonshire County Council, and Beverly Gull MBE opened Changing Places at Towcester Centre for Leisure on Friday 28 January at 10am. Please click here to see some pictures of the facilities available at Towcester Centre for Leisure.
