Graeme Wilson, Coach Biography

Graeme Wilson

I’ve been a keen Sportsman as long as I can remember, and was willing to have a go at anything at an early age!

As I grew up like many Children all my attention time & effort was put into attempting to become a Professional Footballer! I played Youth Football as a Goalkeeper for Northamptonshire, Buckingham/Berkshire, Luton Town, Northampton Town, and Rushden & Diamonds!

However I unfortunately didn’t quite make the grade to become a full time Professional, and it was at that stage that I made the decision to become a Coach, as wanted to provide youngsters with the opportunity to enjoy Sport, as much as I did when I was young!

I started this process by doing a Sports Studies Degree at The University of Northampton from which I graduated with Honours in 2000! I then worked for Northampton Town Football In the Community for 2 years in which time I gained my Level 1 & 2 Coaching Football Awards, as well as a lot of valuable experience!

I then moved on to Rushden & Diamonds F.C  where I progressed from being a Community Coach to a Development Officer!

This involved arranging & delivering football coaching sessions in numerous community settings such as Schools, Young Offenders Centres, and Disability Groups! I was also the Goalkeeper Coach for the Girls & Boys Centre of Excellence which involved developing the talents of the Club’s best Goalkeepers between the ages of 6 &18!

I also went on numerous tours with the club to Denmark & America! In my time at Rushden & Diamonds I also gained my Goalkeeper Coaching Certificate & Level 1 Awards in coaching Basketball & Athletics!

For the past 2 years I’ve been working for Northamptonshire Sport as the Community Multi skills Coach!

In this role I worked in all 7 districts of the County delivering Multi Skills based sessions to all of the School Sports Partnerships in both Curricular/extra curricular time.

I also did sessions for Disability groups, Young offenders, Gifted & Talented pupils, and holiday courses for all the Local Authorities around the County!

In my time at Northamptonshire Sport I’ve attained my Level 1 in Badminton Coaching, Disability Coaching Award, Fundamentals of Movement Coaching Certificate, and Level 1 Coaching Award in Speed, Agility & Quickness (SAQ) training!

I really enjoy coaching Multi Skills, as having been involved in trying to Coach numerous Sports to Children of a very young age, I can appreciate the need for them to learn, and improve their basic skills involving Agility, Balance, and Coordination before trying to transfer them to a Sport specific environment!

At the beginning of August I started my new role of Sport & Disability Development Officer for Northamptonshire Sport. This still involves me delivering coaching sessions, but justspecifically to groups of people with disabilities.

I’m also now responsible for working with other partneragencies in the county to help create more sporting opportunities for people with disabilities while also alleviating barriers that currently prevent them from participating.
